Building Energy Modeling and Simulation Services
Energy modeling and simulation can be done based on very least design details like conceptual massing to very fine details like construction documentation. Energy modeling at different complexity serves different purposes. The energy modeling is highly recommended to start at an early phase of design development as it would benefit the team to head on with the right direction toward desirable energy performance from the start. The most cost-effective energy performance decisions are often at the earliest ones.
■ Concept Design PhaseA simple box energy modeling based on architectural concept design and high-level energy use system information (i.e. HVAC systems, and lighting) assumed based on available design intent. The energy modeling at this phase can be conducted in iterative process or option comparison manner. The energy consumption resulted from the modeling can guide Architect to establish design direction to meet energy reduction target, or to provide most best possible energy performance:
- Building geometry and orientation
- Window to wall ratio
- Solar shading provision (shapes. forms ,sizes, and locations)
- Early concept of envelope materials
- Early concept of building systems such as HVAC system type, lighting power densiity
- Potential Renewable Energy generation such as Solar PV systems.
■ Schematic Design PhaseEnergy modeling based on the selected design from previous phase get further developed in greater detail level. The energy modeling assists the design parties to determine:
- Refined window to wall ratio
- Refined solar shading configuration
- Envelope material details
- HVAC system types and component details which impact on energy utilisation • Indoor and outdoor lighting
- Daylighting impact on energy saving
- Energy control provision (i.e. daylight control, occupancy control)
- Refined quantity of renewable Energy generation such as Solar PV systems.
■ Detailed Design Phase Energy modeling at this stage is conducted to evaluate effects of substantial design change if there is, or is updated to confirm if the design maintains compliance with the energy performance target prior to Tender.
■ Construction PhaseEnergy modeling from the previous phase is finalised with confirmed design information. The modeling includes greatest detailed input, hence the simulation gives the most accurate results. For projects participating green building certifications such as LEED and TREES, the energy modeling at this stage will be used for verification submission.
